A Penny For My Thoughts

Very Close Friends Who Live So Far Away

By Paul Wein

I sent out my first South Park Digest on September 1, 1999. Although I communicated with the members of the Digest everyday since I sent out that first Digest, I did not meet a member of the South Park Digest until December of 2000 when I met Donna O'Donnell from Florida. Since meeting her, it is safe to say that I have met over 100 members of the South Park Booster Club. Of the people I have met, some have become acquaintances that I have unfortunately never spoken to or seen since I met them, some I have seen a few more times and talk to occasionally - and some have become so special and so close to me - that I would label them as some of my dearest and closest friends. And while there are quite a few members of the South Park Digest that I would place in this category - two people who seemed to belong there from the moment I met them are Terry and Tish.

I met them at the first South Park Convention in June, 2001 at Denver International Airport. As soon as I saw them and knew who they were, I hugged them and followed them to their car. As I was sitting in the back of their car, I felt like they were my best friends, despite the fact that they were strangers just a few minutes earlier. And during the Convention, I spent most of my time with them more than anyone else. I did not see them again until a year later at SPC2. When I saw them, I hugged them and was almost brought to tears because I missed them so much. And when SPC2 was over, I made my rounds to say goodbye to all who attended - and did not shed a tear until I said goodbye to Tish and Terry.

Besides the fact that they are great people with awesome personalities, they almost instantly give off a vibe that makes you want to be their friend. I am very much a "first impression" type person and can "read" someone just by shaking their hand. And when I did just that to Terry and Tish, I knew right there that these two people would be hold a very special place in my heart and in my life.

I did not see them last year due to missing the Convention, but I am lucky enough to have them here in Brooklyn this week for both Wrestlemania and St. Patrick's Day. As the time of their arrival got closer, I was very eager to see them, and when they finally arrived, I hugged them before they even made it in my house. I love those two and think they are so cool that I would share a two family home with them if they lived here. So to have them in my house and my hometown for a week is very exciting - especially considering that this is their first time in New York City.

So far, we have seen Times Square, Ground Zero, and a few sites of interest in Brooklyn. They, on their own, have seen Central Park, FAO Schwartz and the Empire State Building. I love when friends of mine come to my hometown for the first time and I get to show them all that this great City has to offer - and it was especially fun to do that with Terry and Tish.

They are leaving tomorrow morning, and although I will see them again in July for SPC4 - I know it will be very hard to say goodbye to them. I wish they lived in Brooklyn so we could see more of each other, but that is the one painful thing about the friends I have made through South Park Digest - having so many close friends live so far away.
