From The Locker Room

From Rasslin To Romance

By Paul Wein

These days, it seems as if those glory days of brute and brawn have been replaced with love triangles and paternity problems as storyline has put a sleeper hold on the physical aspect of wrestling.

As compared to fifteen years ago when a wrestler's words on the mic would be something like, "You're mine when I get you in that ring!" These days, I'm half expecting, "Oh darling, what happened to us?" Like it or not - that's the way it is - and it's working.

Take a look at the WWF for instance. Before trying to figure out who ran over Stone Cold Steve Austin, the main focus of our attention every Monday night was the ever tumultuous marriage between Stephanie McMahon Helmsley and Triple H. Once hated by Stephanie, Triple H has been the love of her life since she said, "I do" to Hunter and, "I don't" to her dad - and the fans ate it up. Now that the WWF has added a new "Angle" to this mix - it looks as if this threesome will be dominating our airwaves all the Days Of Our Lives.

The WCW is no different as both viewers - as well as Ms. Hancock - try desperately to figure out just who is the father of her unborn baby. Once a member of WCW's Standards and Practices - she has now lowered her standards and practiced sleeping with half of the WCW locker room. Although this storyline has a Flair for the dramatic - it is also capturing the hearts, and attention of fans everywhere.

I have to say that the ECW - although it has had its share of romantic moments - has kept out of this love fest. The most grapple-oriented of the "big three", the Philly Powerhouse will no doubt break out the heartbreak and passion to aid the head butts and pile drivers - pardon the pun - if ratings slip. But for now - they are love free.

So how long will the romance last? How much longer will love going asunder and passion burning brightly make us tune in to hear the latest installment? Who knows - but I know one thing for sure - we love it now.
