Are You Ready For Some Football

By Paul Wein

At a press conference today, the World Wrestling Federation announced the formation of the XFL, a football league that will play a more aggressive and fast paced type football game on the NFL's off season. At the press conference, WWF Chairman Vince McMahon promised that the XFL, "will take football where the NFL is afraid to go." While I wish McMahon and the WWF all the luck in the world on their new venture I think it's going to flop and there are a number of reasons I feel this way.

The first reason I feel this way is due to the way the media perceives the WWF and Vince McMahon. Whether you are a wrestling fan or not, you cannot deny the success of the WWF. They have the highest rated show on cable television, their superstars are on the covers of every major magazine in print, both Have A Nice Day and The Rock Says reached #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List and the media still does not take the WWF seriously and basically knocks wrestling every chance they get. So if they don't take the WWF seriously no matter how successful they are what makes you think they will take the XFL seriously?

Another reason I don't think the XFL will sail is because aside from wrestling none of the other business ventures McMahon has tried have succeeded. Anyone remember the World Bodybuilding Federation? Or how about IcoPro? No matter how much money and publicity were behind those two ventures they didn't go over It just seems that the McMahons were meant for wrestling nothing else.

My third and final reason why I feel the XFL will not work is because, as with the other McMahon ventures, he will cross over both companies. In due time, the XFL and WWF superstars will collide in some way. Be it on the football field or in the squared circle, the paths will cross, and all this will do nothing but fuel the media's distaste for the WWF as I mentioned in my first reason.

Don't get me wrong, wrestling is what it is today because of Vince McMahon. He has done for wrestling what Bill Gates did for computers. If not for Vince's vision, creativity and ability to thumb his nose at his critics and constantly prove them wrong, wrestling would be nothing more than the local promotions they once were. I just think that he should stick to what he does best and leave football to the pros.
